Enedy \nOpen auditions for Altoona Community Theatre’s production of “Mary Poppins” will be held Sunday and Monday\, February 23 and 24\, beginning 6:00 p.m. in the Altoona Community Theatre Rehearsal Hall\, 1213 12th Street\, Downtown Altoona. Auditionees need only attend one night of auditions unless asked to attend callbacks. All audition times are for all ages appropriate for the show. \nEveryone should be prepared with 16 to 32 bars of a broadway song that showcases their ability. No unaccompanied singing will be permitted. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring paper copies of your sheet music in the appropriate key. \nA song will be taught to those without a prepared number. \nEveryone will participate in a general movement audition. No special dance clothing is required\, just clothes and shoes that are comfortable to move in. Please bring dance or character shoes to change into\, if you have them available. During the movement audition you will have the opportunity to demonstrate advanced dancing skills if you would like to be considered for a full dancing and singing ensemble role\, Bert\, or Mary Poppins. \n  \nDANCE ONLY audition for those not interested in singing:\nSunday February 23 at 4pm \nThis DANCE ONLY session is a special dance ensemble audition for those only interested in dancing in “Step in Time”\, “Jolly Holiday”\, or “Supercali..” This dance ensemble will include advanced tapping and dance skills\, but not necessarily singing. Only attend this dance audition if you do not want to sing.  \nIf you are unable to attend this date for a dance audition\, please call ACT Office at 814-943-4357 to discuss attending on Wednesday February 26 instead. Bert\, a chimney sweep\, introduces us to the troubled Banks family in 1910 London. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep. The family finds that she is the answer to their prayers\, but in the most peculiar way.\n\n\n\nMary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Songs include “A Spoonful of Sugar\,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee\,” “Step in Time\,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”\n\n\n\nAvailable Roles & Vocal Range: \nAge ranges are a suggestion\, please audition for any role you would like to be considered for. Listed by order of appearance. \nBert: The narrator of the story\, is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman\, Bert has many occupations\, including hurdy-gurdy player\, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm\, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man.\nGender: male\nAge: 25  to 45\nVocal range top: F#4\nVocal range bottom: B2\nMust have dance abilities and not be afraid of heights. \nGeorge Banks: The father to Jane and Michael Banks\, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding “precision and order” in his household\, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn’t have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny\, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor\, however\, conceals a sensitive soul. A baritone\, George may speak-sing as necessary.\nGender: male\nAge: 30 to 60\nVocal range top: Eb4\nVocal range bottom: Bb2 \nWinifred Banks: George’s wife and Jane and Michael’s mother. A former actress\, she is loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband’s desire to only associate with “the best people” as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she’s not up to the job of “being Mrs. Banks\,” yet\, she is\, and more. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice\, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor\, Miss Lark. Can be any vocal range as needed. If Admiral Bloom doubles as the Banks Chairman\, he can be a baritone.\nGender: male\nAge: 50 to 75 \nMrs. Brill: The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harassed\, she’s always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn’t have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. She does not have to be a strong singer.\nGender: female\nAge: 40-60\nVocal range top: D#5\nVocal range bottom: F#3 \nRobertson Ay: The houseboy to the Banks family. Lazy\, sleepy and grumbling\, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. He doesn’t do a lot of singing\, but his “Spoonful” solo can be a fun surprise.\nGender: male\nAge: 20 to 40\nVocal range top: G#4\nVocal range bottom: F3 \nMary Poppins: Jane and Michael Banks’s new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange\, neat and tidy\, delightfully vain yet particular\, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo soprano with strong top notes\, she should be able to move well. She can have a more traditional soprano sound\, but precision and diction is the key.\nGender: female\nAge: 20 to 40\nVocal range top: C6\nVocal range bottom: Gb3\nMust have some dance ability and not be afraid of heights. \nPark Keeper: Uniformed and officious\, he makes sure no one breaks park regulations. Neleus was separated from his father\, Poseidon\, and misses him very much. A small and lonely being\, he is very happy to befriend Jane and Michael. He speaks with an accent from Northern England.\nGender: male\nAge: Any \nBird Woman: Covered in a patchwork of old shawls\, and her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs to passersby\, who ignore her as if she doesn’t exist. Sings “Feed the Birds.” There can be a gruff\, folksy quality to her voice that reflects the hardness of her life.\nGender: female\nAge: 30 to Any\nVocal range top: C5\nVocal range bottom: Gb3 \nMrs. Corry: Owns a magical gingerbread shop. Mayhem ensues as this professional company scrambles to keep the show going and everything that could possibly go wrong does\, to hilarious\, ridiculous results! \n  \nAvailable Roles \nThe cast requirements include four men and three women\, all over the age of 18. Actors will need to have brushed up on their English accents and be able to engage in varying degrees of physical comedy (based on the roles.) \nSir Selsdon Piddock – A “Classical” actor in the truest sense of the word who will be playing Ebenezer Scrooge. \nMrs. Cordelia Ffoliet-Ffolkes Ffortescue Woods – An actress who wishes her resume were as long as her name. She will be playing multiple roles this evening. \nDame Rowena Middleton-Lewis – An actress of some pretensions who plays multiple roles. \nCynthia Imbry – A young actress who is the company understudy and is suddenly forced into the production and isn’t prepared but anxious to make an impression. \nMr. Elyot Crummels – A once dashing leading man now playing character parts. He will be very busy in this evening’s production. \nTeddy Shub – An over-anxious young actor who appears to be all teeth. \nMrs. Bettina Salisbury – The company diva who was pretending to be ill for this evening’s performance\, assured that the show would be canceled. She is mysterious and alludes to a troubling past\, though she has no intention of elaborating on it. She is the fourth guest to arrive at the manor. \n  \nMr. Paravicini (40+) – A mysterious man who arrives unexpectedly during the middle of a snowstorm. He is pleasant enough\, but there is an uneasiness to him. Nobody knows a thing about him\, and he seems to like it that way. But when Detective Rough arrives one night to visit Mrs. Manningham while she is alone\, questions arise and secrets are revealed.\nFirst performed in 1939\, this play is relevant today since it is the origin of the term “gaslighting” which Merriam-Webster named their “word of the year” for 2022.” \n  \nCast of Characters: \nJack Manningham– (35-50) A little too well dressed. A narcissist and smooth talker. His manner is suave and authoritative. Must be capable of great violence and cruelty.  Will require stage kissing and violence. \n  \nBella Manningham– (25-35) A recent beauty but now severely depressed and highly anxious. When their host turns up dead\, the dinner guests become murder suspects.  So whodunnit?  Join the iconic oddballs known as Miss Scarlet\, Mr. Green\, Colonel Mustard\, Mrs. White\, Professor Plum\, and Mrs. Peacock as they race to find the murderer while the body count stacks up. \nBased on the 1985 cult classic film and the popular board game\, “Clue: On Stage” is a madcap murder-mystery-comedy-thriller that will keep you guessing until the final twist. \nCast of Characters:\nAll roles are available. No prior theatrical or ACT experience is required. Roles are open to diverse & gender-inclusive casting. \nWADSWORTH– (30+) a traditional British butler in every sense: uptight\, formal and “by the book.” He is the driving force in the play. \n  \nYVETTE– (18-35) a loyal and sexy French maid. \n  \nMISS SCARLET– (30s-40s) a dry\, sardonic D.C. madam\, more interested in secrets than sex. \n  \nMRS. PEACOCK– (40+) the wealthy wife of a senator. A bit batty\, neurotic\, and quick to hysteria. \n  \nMRS. WHITE– (30s-40s) a morbid\, and tragic woman. Mrs. White may or may not be the murderer of her five ex-husbands. \n  \nCOLONEL MUSTARD– (40+) a puffy\, pompous\, dense\, blowhard of a military man. \n  \nPROFESSOR PLUM– (35+) an arrogant academic\, easily impressed by himself. \n  \nGREEN– (25-40) a timid yet officious rule follower. Please read below for more information. \nOliver! performs May 4-7\, 2023. Actors must be available for all performances. Availability for rehearsals will be asked at auditions\, please be prepared to list all conflicts from auditions to performance dates. \nFull Vaccination against COVID-19\, including updated boosters\, is strongly encouraged but not required for participation in Oliver!. We will ask for vaccination status at auditions. This information is important for us to have in case of illness during the show process. If you have any questions regarding our policies on Covid-19 & vaccines\, please contact the ACT Office at 814-943-4357. \nAudition Information:\n\nGeneral auditions will be held in separate sessions each day for children and adults:\n-Auditionees 17 and under will audition from 5 PM to 6:30 PM\n-Auditionees 18 and up will audition from 7 PM to 9 PM\n-Please arrive as close to the start time for your age group as possible\nAll auditionees should prepare 24-32 bar cut of a theater song in the style of the show\, preferably one that reflects the character you’re most interested in. Auditionees are required to provide printed sheet music in the correct key for the pianist.\nIf you do not have a song prepared\, you will be given a short song to audition with.\nAuditions will also include a short movement audition. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit\, the benevolent victim\, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout\, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back\, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.” \n  \nCast of Characters:\nAll roles are available. Emily is George’s schoolmate and next-door neighbor\, then his fiancée\, and later his wife. She is an excellent student and a conscientious daughter. Emily suffers an untimely death and the show continues to follow her in the afterlife. Emily’s age in the show ranges from 16 to 28. \nDr. Gibbs  – George’s father and the town doctor. Mrs. Soames helps give a sense of the intertwined lives of the citizens of Grover’s Corners. \nSimon Stimson  – The choirmaster\, whose alcoholism and undisclosed “troubles” have been the subject of gossip in Grover’s Corners for quite some time. *Trigger warning: suicide* Mr. Stimson appears in the land of the dead souls in Act III having committed suicide by hanging himself in his attic. \nRebecca Gibbs –  George’s younger sister. Rebecca’s role is minor\, but she does have one very significant scene with her brother. Young girl about 11-13 \nWally Webb –  Emily’s younger brother. Wally is a minor figure\, but he turns up in Act III among the group of dead souls. Wally dies young\, the result of a burst appendix on a Boy Scout trip. Young boy about 11-13 \nHowie Newsome –  The local milkman. Howie  reappears during every morning scene—once each in Acts I\, II\, and III \nJoe Crowell\, Jr. –  The paperboy. \nSi Crowell  – Joe’s younger brother\, also a paperboy. \nProfessor Willard  – A professor at the State University who gives the audience a report on Grover’s Corners. Professor Willard appears once and then disappears. \nConstable Warren –  A local policeman. Constable Warren keeps a watchful eye over the community. \nSam Craig –  Emily Webb’s cousin\, who has left Grover’s Corners to travel west\, but returns for her funeral in Act III. \nJoe Stoddard –  The town undertaker. Strong-willed\, passionate\, smart with a dry wit. \nUncle Fester- (20+) Tenor/Baritone Vocals. Serves as the musical’s narrator. Larger than life & energetic. \nGrandma- (35+) Character vocals. Feisty old woman. Not your traditional grandma\, loves scheming with Pugsley. May be cross-cast but character will remain a woman. \nWednesday Addams- (18-30) Female\, Pop Soprano/Mezzo Vocals. Adventurous. Same dry wit as her mother. Struggling with falling in love with a “normal” boy & how to tell her very not normal parents \nPugsley Addams- (15-25) Alto Vocals. Troublesome younger sibling of Wednesday. Funny but sometimes annoying. Loves being tortured. \nLurch- (25+) Male\, Groans. The Addams butler who knows all\, but says less. Speaks only in moans and groans. \nMal Beineke- (30-60) Male\, High Baritone/Tenor Vocals. Stuffy father to Lucas and exasperated husband to Alice. Stereotypical businessman\, worried about appearances. \nAlice Beineke- (25-60) Female\, Soprano Vocals. Charming but quirky housewife. Devoted wife & mother\, willing to put her own desires aside for Mal & Lucas. Her time at the Addams family home makes her question always needing to appear “perfect” \nLucas Beineke- (18-30) Male\, Tenor Vocals. Attractive but dorky. “Normal” but desperately in love with Wednesday & intrigued by her. Struggles with the differences between their families. \nThe Addams Ancestors – (15+) All vocal ranges. Summoned from “the other side” to celebrate with the family. They assist in telling the story & interact with the other characters throughout the show. \nThing- Disembodied hand. Non-speaking role. Actor may also work as stage crew. \nRoles open to diversity & gender inclusive casting unless gender is specifically noted.  \nAge ranges are suggested ages for actors who play the role\, but may need to play older or younger.
