SUMMARY:Sondheim Workshop Session 2
DESCRIPTION:G.O.A.T.?\nThe works and legacy of Stephen Sondheim\n\nPlease note\, this is a two-part workshop on January 14 & 28. If you missed the first session but would like to join us for the second\, please call the ACT Office at 814-943-4357\nStephen Sondheim was one of Broadway history’s songwriting titans\, whose music and lyrics raised and reset the artistic standard for the American stage musical. An intellectually rigorous artist who perpetually sought new creative paths\, Sondheim was the theater’s most revered and influential composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century\, if not its most popular. \nIn two Saturday morning sessions\, we’ll dig into Sondheim’s work and how he and his many collaborators reimagined and reshaped the art of musical theatre\, impacting and influencing the works of future theatrical writers\, directors\, and composers. \n  \nAbout the Facilitator\n\nJonathan O’Harrow would never call himself a Stephen Sondheim expert\, but the title “overly-obsessed superfan” certainly seems to fit. Jonathan eagerly gobbles up every book on the theatre legend that he can find and has spent ridiculous amounts of time (and money) acquiring as many video and audio recordings of the composer’s works as possible. \nJonathan has had the opportunity to work on many Sondheim shows\, having performed in productions of “Gypsy\,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum\,” “Company\,” “Merrily We Roll Along\,” and “Assassins\,” as well as directing Altoona Community Theatre’s productions of “A Little Night Music” and “Sweeney Todd.”

DESCRIPTION:  \nAll ACT Members are invited to the 2022 Holiday Party on December 16 in the ACT Rehearsal Hall.\nPlease join us for Pizza & Festivities to celebrate the season & our theatre family. \nWe ask that you please RSVP by December 9 to act@altoonacommunitytheatre.com \n\nPizza & Soda Provided\nBring a snack to share if you’re able\nBYO Adult Beverages (Must Have ID)\nThe ACT Great Gift Give Away begins at 7:00PM\nACT Members only\, but you may bring a Non-Member Guest\n\nMemberships run with our Theatre Seson\, July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Please make sure your membership dues for this season are paid.\nOnline Membership Registration (New members welcome!)\n\n\n\nMORE INFORMATION: \nThe ACT Great Gift Give Away: Each guest who wants to participate brings one “White-Elephant” Gift. This gift can be a silly item\, a random object cluttering up your house you want to get rid of\, or\, if you choose to purchase something\, any gift under $30—just make sure whatever it is\, you wrap it pretty! Rules will be explained at the party. You may walk away with a nice present\, a useless trinket\, or maybe nothing at all. It’s a game of chance\, speed\, and theft. Similar to paper bag awards\, it’s an honor to play\, but not always an honor to win. \nDrinking Rules: All ACT functions that involve alcoholic beverages are served by a RAMP certified bartender. Even in the case of Bring Your Own Booze such as this party\, you must turn your drinks over to the bartender and provide an ID. (We don’t care how old you look– No ID\, no wristband\, no drinking!) Your drinks will then be served to you in appropriate portions to make sure everyone is drinking responsibly. ACT pays for the bartender’s fee\, but tips from our party guests are appreciated. \nPossible other games & activities to follow the Gift Give Away. Bartender stops serving at 9:30PM & Party officially ends at 10:00PM \nWe hope too see you there!

SUMMARY:Crying On Cue Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Crying On Cue\nEver wanted to expand your acting skills to include crying on command? Altoona Community Theatre is hosting a workshop to help you nail those crying scenes! \nFacilitators Emily Evey and Jordan Shumaker will coach actors on techniques to realistically cry on stage. You’ll learn Stanislavsky based techniques such as Sense Memory\, personalization and substitution. Combined with an open mind and vulnerability\, these lessons will have you in tears in no time! \nThis workshop will require comfortable clothing and shoes\, a willingness to be vulnerable in a group\, and a monologue or scene which has heightened emotion or the actor is comfortable crying over. If the actors need help picking a text\, they are encouraged to reach out to the ACT Office at 814-943-4357 or act@altoonacommunitytheatre.com. Participants should come ready to work; focus and willingness are necessary. \nThe workshop will include meditation\, a physical warm-up\, sense memory exercises\, and multiple crying exercises. This will be an intimate class with sensitivity and vulnerability required. .Acting is hard. Crying is messy and scary\, but it’s something we do and can be a very powerful tool. And as performers\, you want every tool you can have in your tool box! \nDue to the intimate nature and intense techniques being taught\, the class is only open to those ages 18 and up. The workshop is limited to 15 attendees to allow for maximum learning and participation for all. \n$10 for ACT Members\, $15 for Non-Members \nREGISTER HERE\n  \n  \nAbout the Instructors:\n Emily Evey studied Theatre\, Communication\, and Social Justice at Juniata College. Through her degree\, Emily trained\, studied\, and worked with over twenty professional theatre artists. Emily’s experience includes\, but is not limited to: mime\, trapeze\, and acting for the camera. Emily’s has taught and adjudicated at national competitions and conferences. She has directed at Things Unseen Theatre Company\, Altoona Community Theatre\, and Bishop Guilfoyle. \n  \n  \n \nJordan Shumaker studied acting at Penn State University where he majored in Theatre with a minor in creative writing. He’s been in a plethora of shows and has been studying acting and theater for thirteen years. He has performed with ACT and Things Unseen for nearly a decade and hopes to have brought depth and truth to his performances. Jordan has always loved technique and would love to help others develop their acting skills.

There will be one 15 minute break.\nAttendees will be emailed materials & a Zoom link upon Registration.\nCost: $10.00 for ACT Members\, $15.00 for NonMembers\nClick Here To Register\nAbout the Workshop: \nSeveral American playwrights of the twentieth century may deserve to be called great.  Such notables as Thornton Wilder\, Edward Albee\, and Lillian Hellman may come to mind.  But if one were forced to choose who would be the top three American playwrights of the past century\, a strong case could be made for the subjects of this upcoming ACT workshop: Eugene O’Neill\, Tennessee Williams\, and Arthur Miller. \nEugene O’Neill \nO’Neill was one of the first American playwrights to introduce the concept of realism into his plays.  This realism took the form of characters on the fringes of society often depicting their deep-seated fears\, and they were expressed in varied American dialects and colloquialisms.  O’Neill’s aim was to strip American theatre of false sentimentality and present an honest view of American culture.  He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1920\, 1922\, 1928\, and 1957\, and for literature in 1936. \nIn the workshop\, we will be studying A Long Day’s Journey into Night – the last play O’Neill wrote before he died\, and the one generally regarded as his best. \nTennessee Williams \nLauded as one of the greatest American playwrights of the twentieth century\, Williams used his own life to influence the content of his plays.  Topics included drug abuse\, alcoholism\, and domestic violence\, all of which he experienced during his life.  Much of Williams’s acclaimed work has been adapted for the cinema.  He also wrote short stories\, poetry\, essays\, and a large collection of memoirs.  Four years before his death\, he was inducted in The American Theater Hall of Fame.  His plays Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire won Pulitzer Prizes.  We will be analyzing “Streetcar” in this workshop. \nArthur Miller \nAs one of the most prominent playwrights of the twentieth century\, Arthur Miller’s work focuses on the balance between the individual and society – how society influences the individual and how the individual influences the world around them.  Themes include the American Dream\, social responsibility\, and human purpose.  His most famous works include The Crucible and the Pulitzer Prize winning Death of a Salesman.  We will be studying the latter in the workshop. \nUseful Source:  Gardner\, Ashleigh. “13 Classic American Playwrights You Should know\,” in Performer Stuff.  n.p. August 16\, 2016. \n  \n \nAbout the Moderator: \nDavid Rutter has a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Penn State University\, and a Master of Arts degree in theatre from San Diego State University. He also taught high school theatre in California and Florida for thirty-seven years before retiring and moving “back home” to central Pennsylvania.  David has most recently appeared onstage with Altoona Community Theatre in “Big River” and “Romeo & Juliet”.

SUMMARY:ACT Book Club "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)" by Karel Capek
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 18 at 6 pm\nR.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) A Fantastic Melodrama in Three Acts and an Epilogue\nBy Karel Capek Join Altoona Community Theatre and our moderator\, ACT member Shane Sedelmyer in a lively discussion of a play in an unusual genre: science fiction.   Shane is a pop culture lover and an avid reader. He is a an English teacher and theatre director by trade.  He is excited to put both to great use by moderating this book club and supporting ACT.  Shane holds a Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Arts from Penn State Altoona and a Master of Arts degree in English Literature and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. \nRossum’s Universal Robots by Karel Capek \nR.U.R. is a 1920 science-fiction play by the Czech writer Karel Čapek. “R.U.R.” stands for Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti (Rossum’s Universal Robots\, a phrase that has been used as a subtitle in English). It premiered on 25 January 1921 and introduced the word “robot” to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. R.U.R. quickly became influential after its publication. By 1923\, it had been translated into thirty languages. The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people\, called roboti (robots)\, from synthetic organic matter. They are living creatures of artificial flesh and blood rather than machinery\, so they more closely follow the modern concept of androids. They may be mistaken for humans and can think for themselves. They seem happy to work for humans at first\, but a robot rebellion leads to the extinction of the human race. Čapek later took a different approach to the same theme in War with the Newts\, in which non-humans become a servant class in human society. R.U.R. was successful in its time in Europe and North America.     The Robots described in Čapek’s play are not robots in the popularly understood sense of an automaton. They are not mechanical devices\, but rather artificial biological organisms that may be mistaken for humans. A comic scene at the beginning of the play shows Helena arguing with her future husband\, Harry Domin\, because she cannot believe his secretary is a robotess: \n\nDOMIN: Sulla\, let Miss Glory have a look at you. HELENA: (stands and offers her hand) Pleased to meet you. It must be very hard for you out here\, cut off from the rest of the world. SULLA: I do not know the rest of the world Miss Glory. Please sit down. HELENA: (sits) Where are you from? SULLA: From here\, the factory. HELENA: Oh\, you were born here. SULLA: Yes I was made here. HELENA: (startled) What? DOMIN: (laughing) Sulla isn’t a person\, Miss Glory\, she’s a robot. HELENA: Oh\, please forgive me…\n\nThe entire script can be found HERE for free on Project Gutenberg.  This is the version we will be using for referencing page numbers\, but any version of the script that you have access to is okay. The discussion will be held by Zoom and you can join us by clicking HERE.

SUMMARY:Virtual Isaac Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Isaacs are going virtual for 2020! \nThe Virtual Isaacs will be streamed via YouTube on Sunday\, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. Here is the YouTube link. \nIf it was a normal year\, the Mishler Theatre would have been filled to the rafters with high school students and their parents for the 15th annual Isaac Awards on May 23 and 24. But there’s been nothing normal about 2020. \nBecause of the COVID-19 pandemic\, only five of our twenty participating schools were able to perform their musical. In addition\, we obviously could not bring 1\,500 high school students\, their teachers\, and their parents to the Mishler Theatre over Memorial Day weekend for an awards show. \nThe good news is that\, based on feedback from our participating schools from across six counties\, we will be presenting the Virtual Isaacs on Sunday\, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. as a streaming broadcast on YouTube.  Just click on this link.
