Rules will be explained at the party. You may walk away with a nice present\, a useless trinket\, or maybe nothing at all. It’s a game of chance\, speed\, and theft. Similar to paper bag awards\, it’s an honor to play\, but not always an honor to win. \nBooze Rules: All ACT functions that involve alcoholic beverages are served by a RAMP certified bartender. Even in the case of Bring Your Own Booze such as this party\, you must turn your drinks over to the bartender and provide an ID. (We don’t care how old you look– No ID\, no wristband\, no drinking!) Your drinks will then be served to you in appropriate portions to make sure everyone is drinking responsibly. SUMMARY:Three Giants (of American Playwriting) Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Three Giants (of American Playwriting) will be presented Saturday\, October 16th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Via Zoom. There will be one 15 minute break.\nAttendees will be emailed materials & a Zoom link upon Registration.\nCost: $10.00 for ACT Members\, $15.00 for NonMembers\nClick Here To Register\nAbout the Workshop: \nSeveral American playwrights of the twentieth century may deserve to be called great.  Such notables as Thornton Wilder\, Edward Albee\, and Lillian Hellman may come to mind.  But if one were forced to choose who would be the top three American playwrights of the past century\, a strong case could be made for the subjects of this upcoming ACT workshop: Eugene O’Neill\, Tennessee Williams\, and Arthur Miller. \nEugene O’Neill \nO’Neill was one of the first American playwrights to introduce the concept of realism into his plays.  This realism took the form of characters on the fringes of society often depicting their deep-seated fears\, and they were expressed in varied American dialects and colloquialisms.  O’Neill’s aim was to strip American theatre of false sentimentality and present an honest view of American culture.  He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1920\, 1922\, 1928\, and 1957\, and for literature in 1936. \nIn the workshop\, we will be studying A Long Day’s Journey into Night – the last play O’Neill wrote before he died\, and the one generally regarded as his best. \nTennessee Williams \nLauded as one of the greatest American playwrights of the twentieth century\, Williams used his own life to influence the content of his plays.  Topics included drug abuse\, alcoholism\, and domestic violence\, all of which he experienced during his life.  Much of Williams’s acclaimed work has been adapted for the cinema.  He also wrote short stories\, poetry\, essays\, and a large collection of memoirs.  Four years before his death\, he was inducted in The American Theater Hall of Fame.  His plays Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire won Pulitzer Prizes.  We will be analyzing “Streetcar” in this workshop. \nArthur Miller \nAs one of the most prominent playwrights of the twentieth century\, Arthur Miller’s work focuses on the balance between the individual and society – how society influences the individual and how the individual influences the world around them.  Themes include the American Dream\, social responsibility\, and human purpose.  His most famous works include The Crucible and the Pulitzer Prize winning Death of a Salesman.  We will be studying the latter in the workshop. \nUseful Source:  Gardner\, Ashleigh. “13 Classic American Playwrights You Should know\,” in Performer Stuff.  n.p. August 16\, 2016. \n  \n \nAbout the Moderator: \nDavid Rutter has a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Penn State University\, and a Master of Arts degree in theatre from San Diego State University. He also taught high school theatre in California and Florida for thirty-seven years before retiring and moving “back home” to central Pennsylvania.  David has most recently appeared onstage with Altoona Community Theatre in “Big River” and “Romeo & Juliet”.

SUMMARY:Deathtrap
DESCRIPTION:Deathtrap\nby Ira Levin\nSeptember 16-18\, 2021 at 7:30 pm\nSeptember 18 & 19\, 2021 at 2:00 pm\nDirected by Tara Enedy\nIn this classic comedy/thriller\, Sidney Bruhl\, a washed-up playwright\, receives a script from a former student – a play that’s a guaranteed Broadway hit.  It’s an opportunity that Sidney might be willing to kill for.  His wife\, Myra\, suggests the two men could collaborate.  Sidney jokes that it’d be just as easy to murder the young man and steal the script for his own.  When Clifford arrives later that evening\, no one – not even the visiting psychic – could predict where the dark events of the night will go. \nDeathtrap is a sharply funny play full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final curtain. \n*Some Content May Be Upsetting for Younger Audiences. 12 and over recommended. \nGet Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Open auditions for the first show of Altoona Community Theatre’s 2021-2022 season! \n“Deathtrap” by Ira Levin\, is a sharply worded who-will-do-it murder mystery that keeps the audience guessing until the last scene. Directed by Tara Enedy \nAuditions will be at the ACT Rehearsal Hall. \nDeathtrap rehearsals will begin Monday August 2nd and the show performs at the Historic Mishler Theatre September 16-19th. \n*If needed\, callbacks will be held on July 28th at 6pm. \nRoles to be cast:\nSidney Bruhl – male\, 40-65 years old\nMyra Bruhl – his wife\, 35-60 years old\nClifford Anderson – male\, 30-45 years old\nHelga ten Dorp – female\, ageless psychic with a Dutch dialect\nPorter Milgrim – male\, 55-75 years old \n\nAnyone auditioning for the show should be aware that the script contains some adult content and all roles include stage combat\, particularly Sidney\, Myra and Clifford. Actors cast in these roles will need to be moderately physically fit and able to lift. \n\nAuditions will consist of cold readings of scenes not from the script. You will be provided the scenes at the auditions. It is HIGHLY recommended that you read the script before auditioning. Prepare to have some fun and think on your feet. \n\n“The play is known as one of the biggest hits on Broadway\, running for four years with almost 1800 performances. The preface to the published script describes it as “something so evil that it infects all who touch it. The thing has a life of its own. In Deathtrap\, Levin has taken the basic components of thrillers and horror stories; murder\, deceit\, innocent dialogue with hidden sinister meanings\, plot reversals\, unexpected turns of events\, etc.\, and twisted and rearranged the pieces again and again.”

SUMMARY:ACT Book Club "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)" by Karel Capek
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, April 18 at 6 pm\nR.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) A Fantastic Melodrama in Three Acts and an Epilogue\nBy Karel Capek Join Altoona Community Theatre and our moderator\, ACT member Shane Sedelmyer in a lively discussion of a play in an unusual genre: science fiction.   Shane is a pop culture lover and an avid reader. He is a an English teacher and theatre director by trade.  He is excited to put both to great use by moderating this book club and supporting ACT.  Shane holds a Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Arts from Penn State Altoona and a Master of Arts degree in English Literature and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. \nRossum’s Universal Robots by Karel Capek \nR.U.R. is a 1920 science-fiction play by the Czech writer Karel Čapek. “R.U.R.” stands for Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti (Rossum’s Universal Robots\, a phrase that has been used as a subtitle in English). It premiered on 25 January 1921 and introduced the word “robot” to the English language and to science fiction as a whole. R.U.R. quickly became influential after its publication. By 1923\, it had been translated into thirty languages. The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people\, called roboti (robots)\, from synthetic organic matter. They are living creatures of artificial flesh and blood rather than machinery\, so they more closely follow the modern concept of androids. They may be mistaken for humans and can think for themselves. They seem happy to work for humans at first\, but a robot rebellion leads to the extinction of the human race. Čapek later took a different approach to the same theme in War with the Newts\, in which non-humans become a servant class in human society. R.U.R. was successful in its time in Europe and North America.     The Robots described in Čapek’s play are not robots in the popularly understood sense of an automaton. They are not mechanical devices\, but rather artificial biological organisms that may be mistaken for humans. A comic scene at the beginning of the play shows Helena arguing with her future husband\, Harry Domin\, because she cannot believe his secretary is a robotess: \n\nDOMIN: Sulla\, let Miss Glory have a look at you. HELENA: (stands and offers her hand) Pleased to meet you. It must be very hard for you out here\, cut off from the rest of the world. SULLA: I do not know the rest of the world Miss Glory. Please sit down. HELENA: (sits) Where are you from? SULLA: From here\, the factory. HELENA: Oh\, you were born here. SULLA: Yes I was made here. HELENA: (startled) What? DOMIN: (laughing) Sulla isn’t a person\, Miss Glory\, she’s a robot. HELENA: Oh\, please forgive me…\n\nThe entire script can be found HERE for free on Project Gutenberg.  This is the version we will be using for referencing page numbers\, but any version of the script that you have access to is okay. The discussion will be held by Zoom and you can join us by clicking HERE.

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope (Virtual Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Encore! Encore!\nBased on the overwhelmingly positive response and several inquiries about a repeat performance… \nSaturday\, December 5\, 2020 – 7:30 p.m.\nWhat would you do if you were a million miles from Earth and your rocket ship was hit by a meteor and suddenly split open\, leaving you floating in space with only your communicator to link you to your six crew members? Don’t know? Faced with this problem\, Bradbury’s people contemplate their fate and philosophize about life and its purpose. This play is not only a director’s dream of possibilities but also a marvelous chance for actors to dig into their beings and face questions of profound magnitude. \nThis show is best viewed on a laptop\, desktop\, or other large screen. \nTickets are $10 for a single viewer\, $20 for a household. We can’t actually enforce it\, but we know and trust our audience. \nWarning: This show contains flashing lights. People with photosensitive conditions should exercise caution. \nGet your tickets HERE
